DID YOU KNOW?? The Batmobile was built from a one-off 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, which originally cost Ford an estimated $250,000 to hand-build in Italy. Some "gadgets" were made from everyday items; the "jet engine" was a 5-gallon paint can, and the functioning oil slick sprayers were made from lawn sprinklers. The original Futura engine and transmission had problems during filming, including overheating and battery issues. They were later replaced with a more reliable Ford Galaxie engine and transmission. The car was initially painted a dull gray, but Barris repainted it with 40 coats of high-gloss black paint with "fluorescent cerise" (orange/red) stripes to make it "pop" on screen.
